Andrew Sturm

Board Chair, Heidelberg Project Board of Directors

Creative Director, Public Works Studio

Andy is an artist and architect who believes that our cities and public institutions need to be reshaped into more just, equitable, and interesting forms. His current work focuses on housing struggle, critical urban pedagogy, and the slow violence of environmental degradation. He believes that the complex issues of our current moment require responses that are structural, intersectional, and developed with those most affected by them.

Andy has worked on a variety of public projects that range in scale from neighborhood plans to urban art installations and housing prototypes. He has engaged with a broad cross-section of groups ranging from municipalities, to non-profits, young people, public institutions, entrepreneurs and neighbors in places like Detroit, Brooklyn, Nicaragua, Dallas, Berlin, Nairobi, Kampala, San Diego and Tijuana.

Andy received his architecture degree with honors in 1999 from the University of Detroit Mercy, and his MFA in visual arts from UC San Diego in 2018, with a focus on public culture, urbanism and collaborative practice. In 2019 he completed the Whitney Museum Independent Studio Program in New York City.
